With Aunt Victoria, her daughter Prudence and her best friend Tamara, Michael's circumscribed world is filled with a female presence that is almost overwhelming. Prudence resents his presence as a 'cuckoo in the nest', Victoria is both strict and unforgiving, leaving only Tamara as his only ally.
But Tamara also seems to have designs on Michael as she begins an illicit affair that overwhelms the young and naive man and takes him into a world that is suddenly both threatening and damages his chances of escaping his Aunt and her daughter.
In this first of three novels ('The Maid and Aunt' trilogy), we begin knowing as little as Michael about the circumstances that have brought him to this critical moment in his life. A point at which every decision he takes, every concession he makes and every word that he speaks will have a heavy price if he makes a mistake. Gradually we discover that Michael is facing a challenge in which he does not understand either the rules of the game or the ultimate goals of the three women in his life.
As he is sidetracked and overwhelmed by Tamara's sensual interest in him, Michael finds himself caught between a rock and a hard place. Trying to impress Aunt Victoria with his gratitude for taking him in and also meet the high expectations of Tamara who seems intent on teasing him to the point of despair. By the time that Prudence arrives for a visit to her mother, Michael will have discovered that the slope that he is on is steep. And deep.
Filled to the brim with intimate detail as only Irene can write, 'Nephew' is a slow burning plot of three women who seek to subvert and gain control over a young man who is overwhelmed by each circumstance that they bring to test his resolve. What is more, we begin to understand the aims of Aunt Victoria are possibly far deeper than Michael could ever guess.
